Product Description
The Rising Sun Badge, one of Australia's most recognised emblems, has a complex history. The rising sun motif appeared on colonial military insignia before Federation, with similar designs seen in badges from the Queensland Scottish Regiment (about 1885), Victorian Cadet Regiment (about 1890s), and 6th New South Wales Infantry Regiment (1896-1903). After Federation in 1901, Major-General Edward Hutton sought a unique badge for Australian forces during the Boer War. One theory suggests it was influenced by a Trophy of Arms given to Hutton, symbolising the coordination of Naval and Military Forces. The badge’s design, featuring seven rays and the word “Australia,” has remained largely unchanged since 1904, symbolising the Australian Army's loyalty to the Crown and the British Empire.
