More than 330,000 served overseas, firstly at Gallipoli and then in the deserts of the Sinai, Palestine and Syria, or in the blood-soaked trenches of the Western Front across France and Belgium. Some 62,000 were killed and more than 156,000 were wounded, gassed, or taken prisoner.
