The Air Medal is a United States military decoration established by Executive Order 9158 on 11 May 1942. It is awarded to recognise meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flight, either in combat or non-combat operations, by members of the United States Armed Forces.
Awarded to any person serving in the U.S. Armed Forces who distinguishes themselves by heroic or meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flight. The medal can be granted for individual acts of heroism, sustained operational flight missions, or exceptional performance in aerial duties. Oak leaf clusters (Army and Air Force) or gold and silver stars (Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard) are used to denote subsequent awards.
The bronze medal is in the form of a compass rose with an eagle in flight carrying a fasces in its talons at the centre, symbolising strength, courage, and readiness. The reverse bears a raised inscription for the recipient's name and the words FOR MERITORIOUS ACHIEVEMENT WHILE PARTICIPATING IN AERIAL FLIGHT.
The ribbon is primarily golden orange with two narrow ultramarine blue stripes near each edge, representing the sun and sky in aerial operations.
SPECIFICATIONS:If you order your medal unmounted, the medal and ribbon will be supplied as separate components. Miniature medals will be supplied with 15cm of ribbon and full size medals will be supplied with 30cm of ribbon.
The court mounting of medals involves securing medals to a stiff backing board, along with the placement of a brooch fitting on the board. This ensures that the medals remain firmly in place and do not shift or move about while being worn.
